What type of damage do you see?

You know your windshield needs to be replaced — maybe the crack has spread past six inches, or the damage is right in your line of sight. Now you are wondering what the process actually looks like, how long it takes, and what you need to do before and after.

At Glass Inc, we replace windshields and auto glass for Atlanta drivers every day. The process is more technical than most people realize, especially on modern vehicles with cameras and sensors. Here is an honest, detailed walkthrough so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: Damage Assessment

Every replacement starts with an inspection. A Glass Inc technician will evaluate:

  • Size and location of the damage — Cracks over six inches, chips larger than a quarter, or any damage in the driver’s direct line of sight typically require replacement rather than repair.
  • Edge involvement — Cracks that reach the windshield perimeter compromise the bond between the glass and the frame, making repair unreliable.
  • Previous repairs — If the glass has been repaired before and the damage recurred or expanded, replacement is usually the better long-term solution.
  • Vehicle features — Does your car have a rain sensor, heads-up display, heated windshield, or ADAS cameras? These features affect which glass is needed and what additional steps are required.

If a repair can safely fix the damage, we will recommend that instead. Repair is faster, cheaper, and preserves the factory seal. We never push replacement when repair will do the job.

Step 2: Selecting the Right Glass

Not all windshields are interchangeable, even for the same make and model. Variables include:

FeatureWhy it matters
OEM vs. aftermarketOEM matches factory specs exactly; aftermarket meets federal minimums but may differ slightly
Acoustic interlayerReduces cabin noise — standard on many newer vehicles
Solar tint bandThe gradient tint at the top of the windshield
Rain sensor lensRequires a specific cutout area in the glass
Heated windshieldEmbedded wires require matching glass with electrical contacts
ADAS camera bracketMust align with mounting points for forward-facing cameras

Glass Inc stocks windshields for most popular vehicles driven in Atlanta — Hondas, Toyotas, Fords, Chevys, and BMWs are always on hand. For less common models, we can source the correct glass within one to two business days.

Step 3: Vehicle Preparation

Before touching the glass, our technician protects your vehicle:

  • Interior protection — Seat covers, floor mats, and dash covers prevent adhesive drips and debris from reaching your interior.
  • Exterior protection — Tape and foam pads shield the paint around the windshield opening from scratches.
  • Component removal — Wiper arms, rearview mirror, rain sensors, and any trim or molding pieces are carefully removed and set aside.

This prep work takes about 15 to 20 minutes but prevents cosmetic damage that would cost far more to fix later.

Step 4: Removing the Damaged Windshield

The old glass comes out using a combination of:

  • Cold knife or piano wire — A thin blade or wire is worked around the perimeter to cut through the old urethane adhesive.
  • Power tools — For thicker adhesive bonds, a reciprocating tool with a thin blade speeds up the process without risking damage to the pinch weld.

The goal is a clean removal that preserves the metal pinch weld in good condition. If the pinch weld shows signs of rust or damage, the technician will treat it with a rust converter and primer before proceeding. Skipping this step can lead to leaks and premature seal failure.

Step 5: Frame Preparation

With the old glass removed, the technician:

  1. Trims the old adhesive — A thin, even layer of cured urethane is left on the pinch weld as a bonding base for the new adhesive. This is called a “short bead” and it improves adhesion.
  2. Cleans the bonding surface — Debris, loose adhesive, and contaminants are wiped away with a specialized glass cleaner.
  3. Applies primer — The pinch weld and the edge of the new windshield both receive a coat of urethane primer. This primer activates within a specific time window, so the technician works efficiently to keep the installation on schedule.

Proper frame preparation is the difference between a windshield that lasts ten years and one that leaks within six months. It is the step most often rushed by low-quality shops.

Step 6: Installing the New Windshield

The technician applies a continuous bead of urethane adhesive around the entire perimeter of the pinch weld. The adhesive pattern is critical — too thin and the bond is weak; too thick and the glass sits too high.

The new windshield is then set into position using suction cups for precise alignment. The technician checks:

  • Even gap around the perimeter
  • Proper centering in the frame
  • Correct distance from the dashboard
  • Alignment with the roofline

Once positioned, the glass is pressed firmly into the adhesive bead. Reinstallation of trim, molding, wiper arms, and the rearview mirror follows.

Step 7: ADAS Camera Calibration

If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield — common on most vehicles built after 2018 — calibration is a required step after replacement. Glass Inc performs:

  • Static calibration — Using a manufacturer-approved target board positioned at a precise distance and angle from the vehicle in a controlled indoor environment.
  • Dynamic calibration — Requires a test drive on well-marked roads at a specific speed so the camera system can self-adjust.

Some vehicles need both types. We use OEM-spec equipment for every major brand including Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and BMW. Calibration adds 30 to 60 minutes to the total service time.

Skipping calibration or using generic tools can leave your lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control inaccurate. This is a safety issue, not an optional add-on.

Step 8: Adhesive Curing and Quality Check

After installation, the adhesive needs time to cure before the vehicle can be driven safely. This is called the Safe Drive-Away Time (SDAT).

  • Standard conditions — One hour with modern urethane adhesives
  • Cold weather — May extend to 2 to 4 hours in temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit
  • High humidity — Atlanta’s summer humidity can actually help urethane cure faster

During the cure period, the technician:

  • Runs a water test to check for leaks
  • Verifies all trim and components are properly reinstalled
  • Cleans the interior and exterior glass
  • Confirms ADAS systems are functioning correctly

What to Do (and Avoid) After Replacement

For the first 24 hours after your windshield replacement:

Do:

  • Leave a window cracked slightly open to equalize air pressure
  • Drive gently and avoid slamming doors
  • Keep the retention tape in place (it holds the molding while the adhesive cures)

Avoid:

  • Car washes — the high-pressure water can compromise the fresh seal
  • Removing retention tape prematurely
  • Parking in direct sunlight if the adhesive has not fully cured (though in Atlanta, moderate warmth actually helps curing)

After 24 hours, you can return to normal driving and washing routines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive immediately after a windshield replacement?

We recommend waiting at least one hour for the adhesive to reach safe drive-away strength. In colder temperatures or high-humidity conditions, we may recommend waiting longer. Your technician will give you a specific time based on current conditions.

Will my insurance cover the replacement?

Most comprehensive auto insurance policies cover windshield replacement. Many policies waive the deductible for repairs and apply your standard deductible for replacements. Glass Inc handles insurance claims directly — we verify coverage, file paperwork, and bill the carrier so you do not have to.

How long will my new windshield last?

With proper installation and normal driving conditions, a windshield should last the life of the vehicle. The adhesive bond and seal are designed to maintain integrity for ten years or more. The most common reasons for premature failure are poor installation, pinch weld corrosion, or impact damage.

Do you offer mobile windshield replacement in Atlanta?

Yes. Our mobile units are fully equipped to perform complete windshield replacements at your home, office, or anywhere in Metro Atlanta. There is no difference in quality between mobile and in-shop service — the same technicians, materials, and processes are used.

What if it rains right after my replacement?

Light rain should not be a problem once the adhesive has reached safe drive-away strength. However, avoid driving through standing water or using high-pressure car washes for the first 24 hours.
