What type of damage do you see?

Atlanta drivers put serious miles on their vehicles. Between I-285 loop commutes, stop-and-go crawls on I-85 through Midtown, and weekend trips up GA-400 toward the mountains, your auto glass takes a beating from road debris, temperature swings, and Georgia’s unpredictable weather. At Glass Inc, we have been fixing windshields and auto glass across Metro Atlanta since 1956, and certain problems show up again and again.

Here are the seven most common auto glass issues we see in our shop, what causes them, and how to handle each one before it gets worse.

1. Chips from Road Debris

Chips are the most frequent auto glass problem we encounter. A small rock kicked up by a semi on I-75 or loose gravel near a Sandy Springs construction zone hits your windshield at speed, leaving a small impact point in the glass.

What it looks like: A small, circular mark (often called a bullseye or star break) typically smaller than a quarter.

Why it matters: Left alone, a chip can spread into a full crack within days — especially during Atlanta’s summer months when surface temperatures on a parked windshield can exceed 160 degrees. The heat expands the glass and pushes the fracture outward.

The fix: Most chips can be repaired in 20 to 30 minutes with a resin injection that restores structural integrity and clarity. Chip repair is almost always cheaper than replacement and is often covered by insurance with zero deductible.

2. Cracks That Spread

Cracks can start from an untreated chip, an edge impact, or even a temperature shock (think blasting your defroster on a freezing January morning in Atlanta). Once a crack starts moving, it rarely stops on its own.

Common crack types:

TypeDescriptionTypical length
Stress crackCaused by temperature change, no impact point2-12 inches
Edge crackStarts within 2 inches of the windshield edge6+ inches
Floater crackStarts in the center area of the glassVaries
Combination breakMultiple crack patterns radiating from one pointVaries

Why it matters: Cracks longer than six inches or those that reach the windshield edge usually cannot be repaired. The longer you wait, the more likely you will need a full windshield replacement instead of a simple repair.

The fix: For cracks under six inches that have not reached the edge, a drill-stop and resin fill can stabilize the damage. Larger cracks require full replacement with OEM-quality glass and proper adhesive curing.

3. Seal Failures and Leaks

The rubber seal (also called a gasket or molding) around your windshield keeps water, wind, and noise out. Over time, Atlanta’s UV exposure and humidity break down these seals, causing them to shrink, crack, or pull away from the glass.

Signs of a seal failure:

  • Water dripping inside during rain, especially noticeable during Atlanta’s heavy spring and summer storms
  • Musty or mildew smell in the cabin
  • Whistling wind noise at highway speed
  • Fogging between glass layers (on dual-pane side windows)

Why it matters: Water intrusion damages electronics, promotes mold growth, and can corrode the pinch weld — the metal channel that holds the windshield in place. Mold is a particular concern in Atlanta’s humid climate, where interior moisture can turn into a health issue quickly.

The fix: Sometimes resealing the existing glass is enough. If the pinch weld is corroded or the glass has shifted, a full removal and reinstallation may be necessary. Glass Inc inspects the seal, frame, and drainage channels before recommending the best approach.

4. Pitting and Surface Erosion

Pitting happens gradually as sand, dust, and fine road particles sandblast your windshield at highway speed. If you drive I-285 daily or commute through areas with ongoing construction like the interchange at I-85 and I-285 in Spaghetti Junction, your glass takes more micro-impacts than average.

Signs of pitting:

  • Starburst glare from oncoming headlights at night
  • Hazy appearance even after cleaning
  • Tiny craters visible under close inspection

Why it matters: Pitting cannot be repaired. Once the surface is compromised, light scatters unpredictably, making night driving dangerous. The glare from oncoming traffic becomes significantly worse, increasing accident risk.

The fix: Windshield replacement is the only solution for significant pitting. The good news is that a fresh windshield dramatically improves nighttime visibility and driving comfort.

5. Scratches from Wipers and Improper Cleaning

Worn wiper blades are one of the most overlooked causes of windshield damage. When the rubber degrades, the metal wiper arm can drag directly across the glass, carving arcs of fine scratches into the surface. Using the wrong cleaning tools — paper towels, abrasive pads, or dirty rags — causes the same kind of damage.

Prevention tips:

  • Replace wiper blades every six to twelve months (more often if you park outside in Atlanta’s sun)
  • Use only microfiber cloths and ammonia-free glass cleaner
  • Never run wipers on a dry windshield
  • Clear debris from the wiper path before activating them

The fix: Very light scratches can sometimes be polished out with a cerium oxide compound. Deeper scratches that catch your fingernail require glass replacement.

6. Discoloration and Delamination

Modern windshields are laminated — two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer (PVL). Over years of UV exposure, that interlayer can yellow, bubble, or separate from the glass. This is more common in Atlanta than in northern cities because of our extended sunny season (about 217 sunny days per year).

Signs of delamination:

  • Milky or cloudy patches, especially near the edges
  • Visible bubbles between the glass layers
  • Yellowish tint that was not there originally

Why it matters: Delamination weakens the windshield’s structural integrity. In a rollover, a delaminated windshield may not support the roof properly, and airbags may not deploy correctly.

The fix: Delamination cannot be repaired — the windshield must be replaced. Glass Inc uses OEM-quality laminated glass with UV-resistant interlayers that resist delamination far longer than budget alternatives.

7. ADAS Camera Misalignment

This is the newest category of auto glass problem and one that many drivers do not realize they have. Vehicles with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) rely on a camera mounted to the windshield for lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.

What causes misalignment:

  • A windshield replacement where calibration was skipped or done incorrectly
  • A significant impact (even one that does not crack the glass)
  • Temperature-induced glass flexing over time

Signs of misalignment:

  • Lane departure warnings triggering for no reason
  • Adaptive cruise behaving erratically
  • Forward collision warning activating unnecessarily

The fix: ADAS recalibration using manufacturer-approved targeting equipment. Glass Inc performs static and dynamic calibration for all major brands and verifies accuracy before returning your vehicle.

When to Repair vs. When to Replace

Not every chip or crack means you need a new windshield. Here is a quick reference:

ConditionRepair possible?Replacement needed?
Single chip smaller than a quarterYesNo
Crack under 6 inches, not at edgeUsually yesSometimes
Crack over 6 inchesNoYes
Damage in driver’s direct line of sightDepends on severityOften yes
Multiple chips or cracksRarelyUsually yes
Seal failure or leakReseal may workSometimes
Pitting or delaminationNoYes
ADAS misalignmentN/A — calibration neededOnly if glass is also damaged

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a small chip really turn into a big crack?

Yes, and it happens more often than you would expect. Temperature changes, road vibrations, and even closing your car door can cause a chip to propagate. In Atlanta’s summer heat, a chip can spread across your windshield in a matter of days. Getting it repaired early saves you the cost of a full replacement.

How do I know if my windshield seal is leaking?

The easiest test is to have someone spray a garden hose on the outside of the windshield while you watch from inside for drips. Pay attention to the corners and bottom edge, where leaks are most common. If you smell mildew or notice damp carpet, a seal failure is likely.

Does insurance cover auto glass repair in Georgia?

Most comprehensive auto insurance policies in Georgia cover windshield repair, and many waive the deductible entirely for chip repairs. Full replacements are also typically covered under comprehensive coverage, though your deductible may apply. Glass Inc works with all major insurance companies and handles the claims process for you.

How long does a windshield repair take?

A standard chip repair takes 20 to 30 minutes. A full windshield replacement takes 90 to 120 minutes, plus adhesive cure time (typically one hour before driving). Glass Inc offers same-day service for both repairs and replacements at our Midtown shop or through our mobile units anywhere in Metro Atlanta.

Should I worry about ADAS calibration after a repair?

If only a chip was repaired and the glass was not removed, calibration is usually not necessary. However, if the windshield was replaced or the camera bracket was disturbed, calibration is required. Skipping this step can leave your safety systems inaccurate.
