How VIN Decoding Works for Windshield Replacement

A Vehicle Identification Number is a structured 17-character code defined by ISO 3779 and enforced in the United States by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Every position carries meaning:

• Positions 1-3 (WMI): World Manufacturer Identifier. Tells us the country of origin and the brand - for example, "1HG" decodes to Honda manufactured in the USA, "WBA" to BMW Germany, "5YJ" to Tesla.
• Positions 4-8 (VDS): Vehicle Descriptor Section. Encodes the body style, restraint system, engine type, transmission, and trim level - the attributes that determine windshield curvature, sensor cutouts, and frit pattern.
• Position 9: A check digit calculated from the other 16 characters. It is what lets a lookup tool reject a mistyped VIN before it ever searches the parts catalog.
• Position 10: Model year, encoded as a single character (A-Y for 1980-2000, 1-9 then A-Y again for 2001 onward, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z, and 0).
• Position 11: Plant code identifying where the vehicle was assembled. Critical for windshield sourcing because some glass suppliers are plant-specific.
• Positions 12-17 (VIS): Sequential serial that pinpoints the exact build sequence and, indirectly, the option packages installed at the factory.
