How VIN Decoding Works for Windshield Replacement

A Vehicle Identification Number is a structured 17-character code defined by ISO 3779 and enforced in the United States by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Every position carries meaning:

• Positions 1-3 (WMI): World Manufacturer Identifier. Tells us the country of origin and the brand - for example, "1HG" decodes to Honda manufactured in the USA, "WBA" to BMW Germany, "5YJ" to Tesla.
• Positions 4-8 (VDS): Vehicle Descriptor Section. Encodes the body style, restraint system, engine type, transmission, and trim level - the attributes that determine windshield curvature, sensor cutouts, and frit pattern.
• Position 9: A check digit calculated from the other 16 characters. We validate this server-side to reject malformed VINs before consuming a Bedrock query.

• Position 11: Plant code identifying where the vehicle was assembled. Critical for windshield sourcing because some glass suppliers are plant-specific.
• Positions 12-17 (VIS): Sequential serial that pinpoints the exact build sequence and, indirectly, the option packages installed at the factory.

It returns the exact windshield part number, glass type (laminated acoustic, solar-tinted, infrared-reflective), and any ADAS attachments - rain sensor mounts, lane-departure camera brackets, embedded antenna lines, heating elements for the wiper park area, or HUD projection zones. You can cross-check the raw vehicle data against NHTSA's free vPIC tool at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder - we use that data as one of several authoritative sources, but vPIC alone won't return a windshield part number.

Supported Vehicle Brands

Privacy and Data Handling

The VIN decoder is intentionally minimal in what it collects. When you submit a VIN, we transmit the 17-character string plus an anonymous timestamp to our AWS Bedrock endpoint so we can return your part number. We do not capture your name, email, phone number, IP address, vehicle owner information, license plate, or insurance details through the tool itself. The decoder runs independently from the quote-request form; only when you choose to email yourself a copy of the results or fill out a contact form do we receive identifying information.

VIN queries are stored anonymously for up to 30 days to monitor model accuracy and detect abuse, then purged. We never sell VIN data, never use it for marketing, and never share it with third parties outside the AWS infrastructure that powers the decoder.
